Song of The Day, 2 ways: Sweet Mental Revenge – Mel Tillis, and Waylon Jennings

Happy birthday, Mel Tillis.

Penned by Mel Tillis for his 1966 full length debut, Stateside, Sweet Mental Revenge would become a hit for Waylon Jennings’, a year later, when his version went to #12 on the Country charts. While both renditions are great, I prefer Tillis’ larger, orchestrated original, to Jennings stripped down Country classic. Plus, Tillis’ vocal inflections make the Dylan influence that much more apparent. Lyrically vicious.
