Happy birthday, Marc Ribot

The man whose guitar sound helped to define my favorite Tom Waits album, 1985’s, Rain Dogs. His Latin influenced, choppy, off kilter style, was the perfect accompaniment for Waits’ musical carnival. Ribot would continue to work with Waits, both on record and tour, while also participating in projects with John Zorn, Elvis Costello, Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, Marianne Faithfull and, one of my personal faves, The Lounge Lizards for their neglected classic, Voice Of Chunk, to name just a few, not to mention his prodigious solo work and with Los Cubanos Postizos.

Take one listen to Ribot’s work on Jockey Full Of Bourbon, and understand his pivotal role in Tom Waits musical development
